Superbus

The Superbus project is an ambitious attempt to disrupt the personal transport industry. This new concept in sustainable mobility consists of: a new electronically powered vehicle capable of cruising speeds in excess of 250 km/h (155 mph), new dedicated infrastructure (such as a dedicated lane on highways), and new logistics via a central routing optimization system.

While hard to pinpoint, some have suggested the Superbus is somewhere between a regular bus and a train. It’s advantage over the former is that it’s capable of vastly higher speeds and greater flexibility, not confined to a rigid schedule or route. As for the latter, infrastructure and implementation is cheaper and does not require the need for changeovers from target to destination. The Superbus’s promise of demand-dependent-door-to-door transportation is a feature neither bus or train has.

Below you will find a brief overview of this interesting concept along with images and additional specs on this new class of vehicle.

The Superbus Team

The project is led by Wubbo Ockels, the Netherlands’ first astronaut and a professor of aerospace sustainable engineering and technology at TU-Delft. Along with two other key people, the three head up the Superbus research and development team.

Prof.dr. Wubbo Ockels
First Dutchman in space and now full professor at TU Delft and the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. At TU Delft he heads the ASSET chair (AeroSpace for Sustainable Engineering and Technology). Within the project he has the role of General Manager

Dr. ing. Antonia Terzi
Italian designer with a Formula 1 background. She used to be the chief aerodynamicist of the BMW-Williams Formula 1 team. Antonia holds the position of Chief Vehicle Designer. Next to that she is assistant professor in the ASSET chair.

Joris Melkert MSc
Aerospace engineer and now assistant professor in the ASSET chair. He has been involved in several aircraft development projects as well in the development of NUNA 3, the fastest solar car on earth. He is in charge of logistics and infrastructure matters.

Porsche-tuner Gemballa - covered in crushed diamonds

German Porsche-tuner Gemballa has created one of the most over-the-top cars in history - a car encrusted head to toe in diamonds. But before every rapper in the world rushes for their AmEx, this is just a demo model - real, driveable versions would have to have compromises such as windshields you can actually see through.  ‘When Gemballa peaks of diamonds, we really mean it’, explains CEO Andreas Schwarz. ‘Our complex process uses genuine diamonds as its key ingredient - not metal pigments, glass fragments, or crystals.’

A demo car showing off Gemballa's new diamond 'paint': The paint is made from diamonds ground down to a dust that still sparkles, so it can be applied to cars like a paint. The German company claims that the sheer number of tiny diamonds in the coating leads to an 'incomparable' shin

Porsche 918 Spyder

Supercars generally have the reputation for being gas-guzzlers as they rage across our roads with a need for speed. But the new Porsche 918 Spyder may be about to change all that - for while it manages a top speed of 201mph, it also manages an economic 94 miles to the gallon. That makes the Porsche more economic than the car with one of the greenest reputations - the Toyota Prius - which can manage 72.4mpg.

Chinese Stealth Fighter

Flying over the skies of Chengdu in southwest China, the Chinese's latest stealth plane - the J-20 Might Dragon - is a testament to China's growing prowess in military technology.

The debut flight of the plane may serve as a warning to the U.S. air force, which has been plagued by a list of problems in their jets - including the revelation that some of their jets have a faulty oxygen system which have slowly been poisoning their pilots.

First 'Green' $30million Superyacht

A new super yacht lets the wealthy go boating without ruining the planet - thanks to an eco friendly design and a hybrid engine. The Columbus Sport 130' Hybrid is powered by a Toyota Prius style mixture of electricity and diesel that reduce the ship’s emissions. It also has a bilge water separator to stop oily deposits spreading out to sea, even though it is not required by law.

Sea Lion - Amphibious Sports Car

A car enthusiast has completed his six-year project to turn his dream sports car into a 60mph sea-worth vehicle. The Sea Lion, as inventor Marc Witt calls it, is a completely bespoke car that can do 125mph on the roads - and then fly down the pier into the water and keep up a respectable speed as it sails past the yachts and boats. And this car could be yours today, as Marc is now ready to cast the car-boat hybrid adrift, putting it up for sale for $259,500.

Hovering Egg Car Volkswagen

When Volkswagen invited its customers to think up some ideas, it was perhaps inevitable that there would be at least one flying car design put forward. But one concept – the ‘Hover Car’ – impressed the firm so much a short YouTube video was made to showcase it. It’s not quite as exciting as the flying DeLorean from Back to the Future – but Volkwagen’s airborne vehicle would certainly turn a few heads.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder

Next up in the never-ending proliferation of Lamborghini’s Gallardo lineup is the LP550-2 Spyder. (In just the past year, Lambo has introduced the Super Trofeo Stradale, the Spyder Performante, the rear-drive LP550-2, and the Bicolore and Tricolore.) The first rear-drive convertible from Lamborghini since the 1998 Diablo SV roadster, the LP550-2 Spyder is a rear-drive version of the LP560-4 ragtop for a bit less money: $211,995 (plus yet-undetermined gas-guzzler tax) versus $232,095.

Acura NSX 2015

When Acura pulled the satiny sheet off of the NSX concept at the Detroit auto show, something unusual happened: There was applause. And we don’t mean the meek golf clap of a couple of newbie journalists or the lone, deliberate thwacking of a smiling PR guy. This was actual, apparently sincere applause for a car. Honda’s U.S. chief, Takanobu Ito, who served on the engineering team for the first NSX, appeared to inflate as he breathed in the goodwill.

Mercedes-Benz MLC 2014

What It Is: A redesigned ML with a very low roofline and a few design cues from the CLS. It will have a big rear hatch and folding back seats. The MLC’s low greenhouse corresponds to the body’s diminished ground clearance.

Subaru BRZ 2013

Some things just don’t make sense. Why is the food at Outback Steakhouse mostly Cajun-style? Why can’t Jennifer Aniston find true love? And why would Subaru and Toyota, two companies whose fortunes are built on mainstream sedan sales, collaborate on a rear-drive sports car?

Amazing Airbrushed Cars

If you want to see some stunning cars, just go to Russia. They have enough gold there to cover a Porsche entirely or enough opulence to put leather on the body of a car. Now, forget about these crazy habits and focus on these amazing ten examples of automotive airbrushing! You have to be a talented artist to make such detailed drawings…

Next Generation Infiniti G Models

The details regarding the next generation Infiniti G sedan, coupe and convertible, which is set to be sold in 2014 summer, have been revealed. One of the most popular cars to come from Nissan’s luxury brand, Infiniti, the G sedan, coupe and convertible was first introduced as the G35 in the early 2000′s, mainly to compete against the BMW 3-Series. The next generation G will be made in the same platform, which was used to manufacture Infiniti’s recently announced models. The overall length and width of the sedan version is supposedly based on the Etherea concept.

Most Expensive Cars

The most expensive cars on the market are also the fastest things on wheels in the world today. Their aspect is also jaw dropping, making these cars worth every single cent you spend to buy them. The super cars of our days are not only fast, but very light-most of them are made of carbon fiber-stylish and innovative. Owning such a queen of beauty must be a great experience and very satisfactory. Here are the top 10 most costly cars in the world. Enjoy!

Trailers or Miniature Cars?

I don’t know too much about these trailers that look like miniature cars except that they are: a little bizarre, don’t actually have much storage capacity, but definitely grab your attention. And maybe that’s enough, I’m not sure; but the Internet has documented this phenomenon and it has culminated in this list of 16 miniature car trailers. One can only assume that the owners of these trailers are a fun group of people!

Flying Car

Flying cars aren't just science fiction anymore. Woburn, Massachusetts-based Terrafugia Inc. said that its prototype flying car has completed its first flight, bringing the company closer to its goal of selling the flying car within the next year.
